Waitrose Pure

It has been a while since I posted about my regular skin care regime. I was well stocked up on Clinique goodies after a few birthdays and Christmas' that it kept me going for a number of months! As I was scraping out the last few dollops of my moisturiser, I remembered reading a review of the Waitrose Pure skin care products.

Each product is £2.99, a bargain and when I purchased them, they were on 4 for 3 across the range, so I picked one of each except the make up remover as I already have two bottles waiting at home.

What can I say, my face is beautifully clear, a battle that I have constantly with my skin. It feels clean and refreshed without the pulling sensation from the Clinque range. 

Although I would rather use a dedicated cleanser, the cleansing wipes do a fantastic job of clearing off the days make up and starting a fresh for the day. I have been using the beauty oil as a face wash in the morning and that has been working a treat. The face cream has a lovely, light feel to it which leaves your skin perfectly hydrated all day and the eye gel is perfect for plumping up those tired eyes (after 4 and half years of broken sleep...).

What can I say other than how impressed I am with this range. It is brilliant on the pocket and does a spiffing job of cleaning and generally making my face feel lovely.

Joules

Recogonise the little hare? If you know me well, then I am sure that you do!  
 

Joules have been a favourite in our household for as long as I can remember, from my horse riding days of wearing Joules polos (of which I still have a vast collection!) to my day in day out Joules wellies. So when we were contacted by them, I knew we had to be involved! We were asked to choose an item from the Joules range, but being a Joulesaholic, I decided the best idea was to go for something that we haven’t had before – the  Junior Milford Quilted Jacket.

With this cold, wintery weather not giving us any respite, a nice warm coat seemed like a sensible option, as I am sure it will get its use! The age 4 jacket has plenty of room without looking too big on our little bee. Nicely padded with a lovely and soft tartan lining, it is very comfortable and great quality.

This week I am loving...

Cowshed Cowlick Shampoo and Saucy Cow Conditioner
Every time I go up north I notice how the hard water here in the Midlands makes my hair feel like straw. After our trip to Maiyango, I fell in love with the Cowshed range, especially their haircare. It makes my hair smell amazing (even late into the night!) and my hair is perfectly soft without going lank by the evening.

Fat Face Pyjamas
I was long overdue a pair of pyjamas at Christmas time. When I sadly didn't receive any as a gift, I knew I had to have the pair that I had eyed up in the Trafford Centre before Christmas. Nice and snug new PJ's. I love them!

Bare Minerals Prime Time
What a stunning little product. So light, this primer glides on. I was a little surprised at how orange it was as it came out of the bottle but it smoothes the skin beautifully. A perfect base to any makeup for that flawless finish.

Lush Cupcake Face Mask
Ooh, a pot of chocolate but not for your tum, what a tease! This smells so yummy and is very relaxing. It leaves your skin nice and clear, perfect for a girlie night in.

Clinique Repairwear Uplifting
A little miracle cream. Really hydrating and great for dry patches, puffy eyes and dark circles. And the tub lasts for ages and ages! A definite staple in my overnight bag.

Business Cards

I have been putting off getting some proper business cards made for a while now. I made my own out of kraft card and rubber stamps but they have run out now. I had an email offering 50 free business cards from moo.com so I thought I would give them a go, as it would only cost me the postage. Afterwards, I decided to go for some Mini Cards too, which I ordered separately. They are incredibly cute and eye catching which is why I thought they would be great for The Bee Hive.

G-Nappy Review

I have been aware of the 'G-Diaper' for quite some time now, as I believe that it is quite a popular system in the states. However, it has only recently landed in the UK. I did have the opportunity to see them at the UKAware show that I was at earlier in the year, however I didn't take the plunge then.

They were brought to my attention again recently, so I thought that I would get some of the basics so that I could try them for myself. I bought one G-Pant which comes with a waterproof G-Pouch, a pack of 6 G-Cloth inserts and 6 extra G-Pouches.

When my package arrived, I must admit, I was rather excited. I opened the package to a surprise. The G-Pant is just like a jersey cotton, just like normal pants. This is wholly unlike any other reusable nappies that I have come across. Inside the pant is a snapped in G-Pouch, which is the waterproof layer. Then you just lay the insert of your choice (cloth is my choice obviously!) and away you go. I actually really like the G-Cloth insert as it is a hemp/cotton mix, which means that it is a perfect absorbency and it has a fleece top so you don't need to worry about adding a fleecey liner as this will keep your baby dry.

What is rather unsual about the G-Nappy is the rear fastening. Where nappies usually fasten either around the waist or with side snaps, this fastens with velcro at the back. I did worry that it would be slighly fiddley to get it done up, but it is actually a godsend when you have a wriggly toddler. Mr Bee finds it quite fun when I ask him to wriggle one way then the other to fasten it. We also have great success getting the nappy on standing up, which is a bonus when your toddler is running away...! I do wonder whether it would be slighly more difficult to fasten on a smaller baby, but I don't think it would be a problem at all.

After a few trial runs with the G-Nappy at home, I decided to take it for a plunge on our trip to London. It was the main nappy that Nana used all weekend. She is a big fan, especially because the pant is just so soft and comfortable. All weekend we had no leaks using this system. The cloth inserts are very reliable and the G-Pouch is fantastic. I changed one nappy that was very saturated, and the pouch was retaining all of the moisture leaving the pant dry. I was impressed.

As Mr Bee had been poorly all weekend and on medicine, his nappies weren't his usual. I am happy to say that the G-Pouch held in even the most yucky of poos, which with other nappies may have not dealt with so well. All it meant was a quick change of the pouch and the pant was clean and dry.

Whilst I was at the Baby Show I visited the G-Nappy stand to pick up a packet of the disposable inserts. I was also enticed into another G-Pant, a Rugby shirt style one, with red and blue stripes. Lovely!

The disposable inserts are a lovely quality, very similar to the BumGenius ones, and decidedly better all round than the Smart Nappy inserts. What also is very handy about these inserts is that you can rip the outer casing and flush the middle, which is degradable in water. The inserts are also fully compostable.

We tested the G-Pant and the G-Pouch with other cloth inserts such as the Flip Stay Dry and Weehugger inserts and got on really well. The M/L pouch fits both inserts in just fine, which means that they will work well even if your stash is made up of other nappies already.

Overall I am really impressed with this nappy, I think it looks pretty trim and is really easy to use. It definately cuts down washing thanks to the G-Pouch, which is more effective than other two part nappies. My only misgiving for the G-Nappy is that it is a sized option, which inevitably means that it will work out more expensive in the long run. Mr Bee is currently in the Large option, although he is only at the bottom of the weight advisories and I know it will fit him better when he is a bit bigger, but this doesn't affect the usefulness of the nappy whatsoever.
The G-Nappies are available in such a wide range of beautiful colours and every now and then, some beautiful limited prints. I am so happy with my lovely little g-nappies, they are perfect for us.

Fuzzibunz Review

Newly landed at the Palace of Pants is the new and improved Fuzzibunz Elite.
I must say, I have never tried any of the Fuzzibunz range before, as I thought they were ever so slightly dated. However, after seeing how popular these new nappies seem to be, I thought I would have a try of one.

When I first got my hands on the Fuzzibunz Elite, I was very shocked as to how petite the nappy looked. It would be an understatement to say that I didn't think that it would fit from Birth to Potty, let alone fit Louie at 21 months! However, having a play with the unique leg and waist elastics, which adjust with concealed buttons and elastic (like you get in kiddies and maternity waistbands!) I managed to manipulate the sizing really easily, and drastically. I can imagine that this nappy would fit a newborn beautifully, providing great containment thanks to the great elastication around the legs.




The nappy comes with two Minky inserts. This was quite a new thing for me, and I think it is one of the only nappies which has minky on the inside instead of the outside. I decided to use the nappy with just the one, larger insert to see what it was up to.


With the nappy on in a medium/large setting, I was surprised at what a beautiful fit the Fuzzibunz was on Mr Bee. It has three poppers in a triangular formation, which means that you can get a really adjustable fit both around the waist and the legs.

Once Louie stood up, I gave it a good inspection and was really happy with how slim fitting it was. Once I put his vest on, you would have no idea that it was a cloth nappy underneath.




 I was adamant that I was going to give the Fuzzibunz a good test, as Louie isn't a very heavy wetter. We were going on a day trip so what better time to do a nice trial. After a good play on the play park and a big roam around the gardens of Calke Abbey, Mr Bee finally had his nappy changed at around 1:30. To my surprise, the Fuzzibunz had lasted all that while without any leaks! I was actually really quite shocked at how soft the nappy still felt after it was completely saturated.

Luckily, it was wash night that evening, so I managed to get it washed quite quickly, which meant that I could test the drying time of the minky inserts. My was I impressed, the minky insert was dry quicker than my usual microfibre inserts!

My only misgiving with this nappy, is the size of the pocket. From the first photo you can see that it is considerably slimmer between the legs than the Bumgenius, which does make it slightly more difficult to stuff. It was alright with my small hands but may prove a little more difficult for Daddies to do.

I think I might have a new favourite nappy! I really am so impressed with the nappy overall, the fit, the snugness, the absorbency (even with just one insert) and the quickness of drying. At £14.95 they are fairly reasonably priced, and are honestly worth every penny, and Fuzzibunz have even treated their customers with some cute printed designs too.

A funny kind of day!

Yesterday morning, Louie and I went to Tiny Talk. Louie just loves it, he loves the signing, the dancing, Heather, the half a biscuit he gets at the end! 

When we got home, the weather turned! It had been threatening to rain all morning, but my gosh, it came down! Our very flat garden was all puddley, and I got thoroughly soaked when I dashed out to rescue Bertie the Wheelybug from the flood!

So we retreated indoors, snuggled up on the sofa, and little Louie had a lovely sleep :) Which let me get on with some making!

I managed to sneak away upstairs,  pinched the iron to prep for some projects. I managed to get the all the prep done for a gadget case that I can make at our craft group, the Saturday Stitchers, today. Hopefully I will be able to get it finished and show you all some pictures later on!

Then when Louie woke up, we all piled into the kitchen and made fairy cakes. Louie did the mixing, Nana broke the eggs and I sieved the flour. Louie helped put the cases in the patty tins too.

Then the sun came out! And it looked so promising that we put the washing on the line, and it stayed nice and got dry.

 For tea, we had 'Creating a Good Life' Garden Vegetable Burgers. It is very rare that we have such a convenience food, but after Laura received an abundance of them for her Vegan and Vegetarian Society, she asked if we wanted to take any home.
I must say, they were delicious! Nana didn't like them so much as they had peppers in them, and she has a big aversion to peppers, but even she said they were lovely. It made a nice change for us anyway.

 Whilst Louie was asleep in the afternoon, and after he had gone to bed, I managed to get this little Owl phone case finished, and updated into the shop. The previous Owl case had sold (woo, first sale!) so it needed replacing. This one is slightly smaller and will fit a smaller, medium sized phone.

 And I also sat and stitched this whilst Louie was not sleeping. A little business card holder made from felt. Will carry about 20 business cards. This will be going up in my shop possibly later on today.

 And I got to work on this gorgeous phone case. I love this fabric, it is from the Gone With the Wind collection from Melly and Me. It has blue, pink and green dandelions and bubbles all over it and I am in love with it. I have ordered some more fabric to make a skirt for my holiday, as I just adore it so much.
This one I will be keeping for myself though, as there are two little faults with it. The elastic for the button is a little short causing it to pull slightly, and I missed one of the hems when finishing the top, so although it is now stitched, it is not the quality that I can sell on.
Not to worry though, as I can use it myself, especially as I am so in love with the pattern!

Oh and it is lined with a beautiful blue geometric floral pattern, which complements it perfectly. I will work on a duplicate and get one up in the shop soon.

Hopefully this week I can work on getting some greetings cards made too.

Gen-Y Review

When it comes to change time, the first nappies I always grab are either Pockets or All in Ones, anything that 'goes on like a disposable'. Two parter nappies have always been a bit of a faff for me.
However, like the Weehuggers, I can change for a pretty print! How fickle!

Gen-Y's landed in the UK in January, and immediately took off. I mean, why wouldn't they, they are absolutely GORGEOUS!  For many cloth bum mummies, appearance is everything! And having the best prints around always gets you kudos. And Gen-Y certainly offer the most glorious range of prints around.

Gen-Y wraps come in two styles, the Classic and the Universal, so they really cater for everyone. The Classic cover comes in 5 sizes, XS to XL and the Universal comes in two sizes fitting from 6-18lbs and 18-35lbs. They can also be used over just about any absorbent nappy that you can find! 


The delightful prints are limited edition, and only a certain number of each design will be made, so once they are sold out, that is it. This gives them a high resale value, due to sought after designs. So when I heard news that Elizabeth had sourced a Glow in the Dark fabric with stars on, knowing my star addiction, I could not wait for us to receive our shipment of them!

I opted for the Universal cover, as I much prefer adjustable nappies, as you can get a much better fit with them, and of course they will last that bit longer, which is awesome because I would hate to have to put them away because they are too small :( The Universal cover has adjusting poppers under the crotch, which I really like the idea of, because when your child is in a nappy on the biggest size, you can see all of the poppers. But with the Gen-Y, you can't. I was slightly worried that the poppers might irritate between the legs but there has been no marks or anything. Very impressed.

So far, I have used my Gen-Y cover with Flip Stay Dry inserts, Weehugger inserts, an Issy Bear night insert, prefolds and fitted nappies, all with great success.
With the slimmer inserts (Flip Stay Dry and Weehuggers) I have the wrap on its smallest setting and it fits like a dream. My little man has averagely chunky thighs but a funny shaped tummy, and we had no problems getting a good fit, which was nice and slim.
With the chunkier inserts, I let some of the poppers out to accommodate the bulk. Even still, they provided a trimmer look than other wraps, and they also seemed to smooth over the prefold, not giving that defined bulk that you can get with that style nappy.

Because they are a side snapping nappy, they come quite low on the leg, which is really good news for users of fitted nappies and terry squares. It gives that extra bit of protection and comfort in the leg area, so you don't have to worry about ill fitting coverage.

Down to my love for my Gen-Y wrap and my Weehugger wrap, I have a new found fondness of two-parter nappies. I can just throw a few inserts into my bag and a spare wrap and they don't take up as much space as the pocket nappies.

Review: Weehuggers

Cute enough to plan an outfit around!

I am not really a big fan of two parter nappies, but when the new Weehugger prints came in at Fill Your Pants, I honestly, could not resist. The "Save the Whales' print engulfed me like a siren song! I was besotted, hook, line and sinker! My justification for buying yet another nappy, was that it will look SO adorable on the beach with a little teeshirt when we go on holiday!


Weehugger nappies come in two sizes, Size 1 (6-18lbs) and Size 2 (15-35 kbs) and both sizes are adjustable by 3x3 poppers at the front. The wraps are made from a really soft cotton which is laminated with PUL to make it waterproof. They have deep leg gussets which are really useful, as they prevent leakages.

Weehuggers are available in Aplix and Poppers. This is where I was put off by the Weehuggers. Louie has been able to undo aplix nappies since he was about 6 months old, so when I am choosing nappies, poppers are a big decider for me. BUT the selling point of the Weehuggers is that the aplix fasteners are in the shape of little mittens, so it really looks like the nappy is hugging the child. Aww ! So I thought I would try it out, because the poppers just aren't as cute!! I was amazed that the aplix is so strong, sometimes I struggle to undo it myself! This is a really big deal for me, as I have big reservations when it comes to velcro fastenings.

The Weehugger inserts also come in two sizes, and are made from bamboo, so they are super thirsty. They are one of the thinnest inserts that we own, even though you need to fold them in half. They are now my favourite insert to use in two-parter nappies by far. They are so slim fitting and just absolutely absorbent, I can not rate them enough.

Louie came down with a bug a few weeks ago and as he wasn't eating much, just having breast milk regularly, his poo reverted back to the breastfed consistency and our normal nappies just weren't doing the job at containing the mess. So we delved into the cupboard and fished out the Little Lamb fitted nappies. The Weehugger wraps fit so snugly around them, giving him such a cute little bum! This combination was a winner, with no leaks!


The Weehuggers are compatible with many types of inserts, including Flip inserts, prefolds, disposable inserts etc. and do provide quite a slim fit with most of these inserts.

I really am in love with my very cute Weehugger wrap, and although I am not a big fan of the AI2 style, I do find myself reaching for it and reusing the wrap as much as I can, because it just so cute!

Smartipants - A review

Smartipants seemed to come out of nowhere but now are probably one of the most talked about nappies of 2011. I had to get my hands on them to see what all the fuss was about!

Now the key things about the Smartipants, the things everyone have been talking about are;

The Smart Sleeve

Long gone are the days of boiling and wet pailing terry nappies! It is now recommended that modern cloth nappies are dry pailed. But one drawback of the popular pocket style modern cloth nappy is fishing the wet insert out before washing.

This is where Smartipants stepped up their game, by introducing the Smart Sleeve feature. You insert the microfibre into the pocket as you would any other pocket nappy,  however the smart sleeve is open at both ends. This allows the insert to wriggle out during the washing process, so no touching the icky insert! And it really works!

The Fit

Smartipants only come in poppers by my, what good poppers they are! If you have a crafty chappy like I do, they are very difficult for little fingers to undo, which means I can rest easy knowing that he isn't going to get it off!

In comparison to their counterparts, the highly successful bumGenius v4, they are a little more generously cut, which is great for larger babies/toddlers but not so good for newborns, however they do feature cross over snaps for the smaller baby. 

Another comparison to the bumGenius is in the bulkiness department. The Smartipants are considerably more trim. On my Smartipants' first outing, I met a fellow cloth user who couldn't even tell it was a really nappy! AND Louie was wearing leggings!

The Quality

The craftsmanship of the Smartipants is great. They are made by US Mums so they have great trade credentials. It is such a small thing, but I love that the stitching on the inside co-ordinates with the outer colour. But on a serious note they are very well made and durable.

Now, most nappies look lush, but after a few washes they lose their lustre. Smartipants hold up so well after washing, you probably couldn't even tell the difference between a new and a washed one! This is going to be music to the ears of you ladies who buy, swap and sell nappies as they will keep their value.

Smartipants come with one microfibre insert which is mighty thirsty. It lasted a good 4+ hours on my little boy and was still going strong when I changed him. I have heard a few good stories about Smartipants lasting 12+ hours at night, but I am too much of a wimp to try this! And because the insert is microfibre, it is really quick drying, which is great if you don't have a tumble drier. The inserts should be dry by morning if you leave them out over night.

So I too haven't found anything bad to say about the Smartipants! Generally a great nappy, and they look great on too. They currently come in pastel colours, but I have it on good authority that later in the year they are releasing an exciting new line of colours.

And at £13.50, they are a really reasonable price, especially if you buy in bulk, they could cost you as little as £11.45 per nappy.

Eco-Balls

We have been having issues with washing, nappies in particular. Mom is worried that it is costing too much for the cost of running the machine, and she is worried about the amount of washing powder used to wash the nappies. You are supposed to use a reduced amount of detergent to wash nappies, because it will effect the absorbency.

After doing some research and consideration, I have decided to use eco-balls. I got some from amazon at the weekend, they arrived this afternoon, just in time for a nappy wash!


These balls are good for 150 washes, which will save us money. You just put them in with your washing, put it on quite a short wash and they do their stuff! And they are a more natural alternative as they don't pollute the water with any toxins etc.
Oh and a plus for nappies, they shouldn't get clogged with detergent therefore strip washes won't be required.

The Verdict

Well the water was soapy so they were definitely getting washed.  They aren't fragranced so I added a few drops of essential oils.
The nappies came out clean and smelling beautifully.

All clean!!

We will see how we get on with them on a permanent basis now!

Obviously this depends on what type of insert you use but I have always had a good trim fit with flips. The Disposable insert has less bulk than a usual disposable.

The wrap will be dry in about half an hour out of the washing machine, the stay dry insert is dry in around 4 hours. I have not used the organic insert.

Value for money 9/10
£13 for the stay dry trial pack, £15 for the organic trial pack, £3-5 for additional inserts. Disposable inserts £4 a pack. These are really good value for money. Especially as you can have more inserts than wraps, the wrap doesn't need to be washed every time, so have plenty of inserts on hand and just change them.

Reliability 9/10
The wrap is bombproof and the inserts last really well.

Other Comments
This really is the most versatile nappy I have come across. I wasn't taken with the idea until I actually bought some. I use the wraps with Little Lambs for night time use, I use a prefold in the wrap. They snap down tiny, and I have it on good authority that they fit small children, so a true BTP nappy.

Very neat looking nappies, come in a rainbow of colours and occasional prints.

I get from 1-3 hours with this nappy

The AIO is simple, just pop it on, the SIO, you just need to pop the insert in, the poppers are colour coded so its a doddle.

Fit 10/10
Really trim fit, one of the trimmest nappies availiable.

Drying time 7/10
They are mainly bamboo so do take a while to dry, a good 24 hours.

Value for money 8/10
£12-£13 a nappy is an average spend

This isn't a nappy I would put on to last, its a 'not on for long' nappy

Where it is fab for trimness you really lose out on absorbency. I know plenty of people who get on really well with these nappies but they just weren't for us :(

Brilliant prints, mostly unisex and girly. Animal prints, spots, stripes, block colours - you name it! Dropped a mark because of the polyester feels a bit funny. (personal preference). The fleece is realllly soft

Comes with a microfibre insert which will probably last about 3 hours which is fine.

Pop them down to the size you need, stuff with the insert and away you go!

Louie still wears his on a small, so I don't know what they would fit like on a newborn, but I can see these lasting a very long while! Not too bulky either.

The covers dry really quickly, as does the microfibre. Probably about 4-6 hours.

You can win nappies for about £3-4 but I would recommend bulk buying if new to real nappies. £30 gets you 10 which is an absolute steal.

First time on this nappy gave me 7 hours! We had been out shopping and admittedly I just forgot to change him. Dry as a bone once home 7 hours later!

Ease of use 10/10
This nappy is an all in one, there are flaps that open up to dry. All you need to do is fold the flaps in then pop on like a 'sposie!

Fit 9/10
Super slim nappy! The slimmest I have found! I am only dropping a point because we ordered a medium as louie was in the middle of the weight bracket but there was no way it would fit him. The large fits perfectly! These nappies are probably great for teenier babies, but if you have a bit of a chunk, definitely size up!

Drying time 8/10
Bamboo-ty's are made from... you guessed it! Bamboo! So the drying time is a little slower, however it is quicker than some of the other bamboo nappies I have found. Has two flaps that open out which really decreases drying time.

Value for money 9/10
Between £14-£15 (depending on size) this nappy is mid-ranged and totally worth it. I can't wait to buy more it is by far my favourite nappy.

Reliability 10/10
This nappy is an absolute star! Lasts for hours.

Fluffy cotton, like a towel. Come with plain wraps.

Not the greatest absorbency, Will last 2-3 hours

Being an AI2 it has two separate parts, you put the toweling on first, then the wrap. Not the easiest if you have a wriggly baby/toddler. You mustn't forget a fleece liner as this will keep your baby dry, without one, the soggy cotton will be against your babys skin.

Fit 6/10
These nappies are very bulky, but do fit well. No leg gape and the wraps that come with them have brilliant gussets.

Drying time 5/10
These nappies take all day on the line, then longer inside to dry. Airer drying, 24+ hours.+

Value for money 8/10
A single nappy coming in at £9, 10 for £80 the price is reasonable.

Reliability 6/10
This isn't the longest lasting nappy, and I have had leaks through the legs. I have also found that the wraps wick very easily.

Other Comments
We use these as a night nappy, with an insert and a microfiber booster too. With the LL wrap, L was waking up wet constantly. We now use a Flip wrap and have more success. This isn't a nappy I personally would use in the day as it really is SO bulky. By far the bulkiest nappy I have come across.

It is easy to get a good fit with these nappies as they are applix, they fit well around his legs (no gape) and his tummy comfortably. However, they are quite bulky.

Drying time 10/10
4/5 hours on the line, dry overnight inside on an airer. Definately one of the fastest drying nappies out there.

Value for money 9/10
Coming in at about £10-£14 nowadays, these are excellent value for money. At the lower end of the scale really, but a really fantastic nappy.

Reliability 9/10
Most certainly the most reliable nappy we have tried. I will definately grab this one if we are going out for a long period of time, or travelling.

Other Comments
Although it is quite a plain nappy as modern fluff goes, it is a sturdy and reliable choice that will last a long time. The velcro gets a little bit grubby but it doesn't affect the performance. Definately a great buy
